What is hair loss and how is chemotherapy related?
In cases of chemotherapy-induced hair loss, your hair growth will resume after treatments.
Can you prevent hair loss during chemo treatments?
There is no treatment for chemotherapy hair loss prevention. Several treatments are tried as possible ways to prevent hair loss, but none has been absolutely effective.
Scalp cooling caps (scalp hypothermia) is one of the hair loss prevention method. Tight bands or ice caps are used during chemo treatment to limit chemotherapy exposure to hair follicles, which helpsreduce the hair loss.Duringthe chemotherapy infusions, a closely fitted cap that's cooled by chilled liquid can be placed on your head to slow blood flow to your scalp. This way, chemotherapy drugs are less likely to have an effect on your hair. The procedure also results in a very small risk of cancer recurring in the scalp. People undergoing scalp hypothermia report feeling uncomfortably cold and having headaches. However, this area doesn't receive the same dose of chemotherapy as the rest of your body. Applying minoxidil drug to the scalp before and during chemotherapy doesn’t prevent hair loss, but it may speed up your hair regrowth.
